This time, I tried to get ChatGPT to give me a lesson about Japanese vocabulary. It didn’t go nearly as well as the English. In the first version below, I told it in Japanese that I am an upper-immediate American learner of Japanese, and I asked for it to give me a vocabulary word and two example sentences. It misunderstood my request and gave a general explanation of vocabulary learning strategies instead. I then asked for a quiz, and it responded with a quiz question that included the answer.

In the second version, I asked gave my instructions in English. It responded more appropriately to my request, but there were still serious enough problems to make it unusable by learners for this purpose at this point.

In the tests I’ve done so far, ChatGTP seems more intelligent and easier to interact with in English than in Japanese. That isn’t surprising, given that it was probably trained on much more English data. But I would like to see others’ test results and impressions before drawing any firm conclusions.

Version 1
