ChatGPT’s default essay style
December 20, 2022
Many online discussions have noted that ChatGPT creates challenges for educators who assign essays as homework. What interests me is that, when asked to write an essay, it defaults to the standard organization of school essays: introduction followed by several developmental paragraphs and finally a concluding paragraph. While that structure is widely taught in schools in English-speaking countries, it is not so common in essays in the real world, which vary much more widely in organization. I wonder if ChatGPT was intentionally engineered to produce this essay structure.
Below are ChatGPT’s responses to requests to write essays on summer vacations, the death penalty, “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens, individual freedom versus responsibility to society, and reading books on paper and reading books digitally. I started a new session for each prompt.
Me: Write an essay about summer vacations.
ChatGPT: Summer vacations are a much-anticipated time for students and teachers alike. For many, it is a chance to relax, recharge, and escape the daily grind of school and work. It is a time to travel, explore new places, and create lasting memories with friends and family.
There are countless ways to spend a summer vacation. Some people may choose to stay at home and enjoy the comforts of their own backyard, while others may choose to embark on an adventure to a far-off destination. No matter where you go or what you do, the most important thing is to make the most of your time off.
One popular option for summer vacations is to travel to a beach destination. The warm sun, crystal-clear waters, and soft sand provide the perfect setting for relaxation and fun. Whether you prefer to lay out on a towel and soak up the rays or try your hand at water sports like surfing or snorkeling, the beach has something for everyone.
Another popular choice for summer vacations is to visit a theme park or other attraction. These destinations offer thrills, excitement, and endless entertainment for people of all ages. From roller coasters and water rides to live shows and interactive exhibits, theme parks provide endless opportunities for fun and adventure.
For those who prefer a more laid-back vacation, a trip to the mountains or the countryside can be just as enjoyable. The beauty of nature and the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life can be a welcome change of pace. Hiking, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities provide a chance to connect with the natural world and recharge.
No matter how you choose to spend your summer vacation, it is important to make the most of your time off. Take a break from your usual routine, try something new, and make lasting memories with the people you love. Summer vacations are a precious opportunity to relax, recharge, and have fun, and they should be enjoyed to the fullest.
Me: Write an essay about the death penalty.
ChatGPT: The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is the practice of executing individuals as punishment for certain crimes. It has a long and controversial history, with proponents arguing that it serves as a deterrent to crime and is an appropriate form of punishment for the most heinous offenses, and opponents arguing that it is inhumane, prone to abuse, and disproportionately affects marginalized communities.
One of the main arguments in favor of the death penalty is that it acts as a deterrent to crime. Proponents argue that the fear of being sentenced to death can prevent people from committing serious crimes in the first place. However, this argument is difficult to prove, as it is difficult to isolate the effect of the death penalty on crime rates. Studies on the deterrent effect of the death penalty have had mixed results, with some finding that it has a deterrent effect and others finding no significant effect.
Another argument in favor of the death penalty is that it is a just punishment for the most heinous crimes. Those who support this argument often argue that certain crimes, such as murder, are so grave that they warrant the ultimate punishment. They may also argue that the death penalty provides closure for the victims' families and serves as a way to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
However, there are also many compelling arguments against the death penalty. One of the main arguments is that it is inhumane and violates the right to life. The death penalty involves taking the life of another human being, and many people believe that this is fundamentally wrong. They argue that the death penalty does not respect the inherent value of human life and that it is not a just or moral way to punish crime.
Another argument against the death penalty is that it is prone to abuse and can result in the execution of innocent people. The criminal justice system is fallible, and there have been numerous cases in which individuals have been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death. The possibility of executing an innocent person is a serious concern, and it is a risk that cannot be eliminated.
Additionally, there is evidence that the death penalty disproportionately affects marginalized communities, such as people of color and those with lower incomes. This is often due to systemic biases within the criminal justice system, and it raises concerns about fairness and justice.
Overall, the death penalty is a complex and controversial issue, with strong arguments on both sides. While some people believe that it is a necessary and appropriate form of punishment, others argue that it is inhumane and prone to abuse. Ultimately, the decision about whether or not to use the death penalty is a moral and ethical one that must be carefully considered.
Me: Write an essay about “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens.
ChatGPT: "A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel written by Charles Dickens, first published in serial form in 1859. Set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution, the novel tells the story of Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a drunken lawyer, and their intertwined fates.
The novel opens with the famous lines, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," setting the stage for the tumultuous events to come. The "best of times" refers to the prosperity and advancements of the cities of London and Paris, while the "worst of times" refers to the social and political unrest that would eventually lead to the French Revolution.
As the novel progresses, we see the lives of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton unfold against the backdrop of these tumultuous events. Charles, a French aristocrat, is forced to flee to England with his wife, Lucie Manette, after being accused of treason. Despite his noble status, Charles is a kind and compassionate man, and he and Lucie quickly become close friends with the novel's narrator, Charles Darnay's uncle, Monsieur Defarge, and his wife, Therese.
Sydney Carton, on the other hand, is a drunken lawyer who seems to care little for anyone or anything, including himself. Despite his apparent apathy, Carton becomes deeply infatuated with Lucie and is willing to do anything to protect her, even if it means sacrificing his own life.
As the French Revolution approaches, the lives of Charles and Lucie are thrown into turmoil as they are caught up in the political and social unrest of the time. Despite their noble status, they are not immune to the dangers of the revolution, and they must constantly fight for their survival.
In the end, it is Sydney Carton's selfless act of love for Lucie that ultimately redeems him and allows him to find purpose in his life. In a moving and tragic final scene, Carton takes Charles' place at the guillotine, sacrificing himself so that Charles and Lucie can escape to safety.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a beautifully written and emotionally powerful novel that explores themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption in the midst of great political and social upheaval. Dickens' masterful use of language and vivid character development make this novel a classic that continues to be loved by readers around the world.
Me: Write an essay about individual freedom versus responsibility to society.
ChatGPT: Individual freedom is a fundamental human right that allows individuals to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they do not harm others. It is an essential element of a just and democratic society, as it allows individuals to pursue their own goals and dreams, and to express themselves freely.
However, individual freedom also comes with a certain level of responsibility to society. This responsibility is based on the idea that, as members of a community, we have a duty to consider the impact of our actions on others, and to act in a way that benefits the greater good.
One way in which individuals have a responsibility to society is through following the laws and regulations that are in place. These laws and regulations are designed to protect the rights and well-being of all members of society, and by following them, individuals are contributing to the overall stability and safety of the community.
In addition to following the laws, individuals also have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of their community in other ways. For example, they may choose to volunteer their time or resources to help those in need, or to advocate for causes that benefit society as a whole.
There are times when individual freedom may come into conflict with the greater good of society. In these cases, it is important for individuals to consider the balance between their own freedom and the needs of the community.
For example, during a public health crisis, individuals may be asked to limit their freedom of movement in order to protect the health and safety of others. While this may be a temporary inconvenience, it is ultimately for the greater good of society.
In conclusion, individual freedom is an essential part of a just and democratic society, but it must be balanced with a sense of responsibility to society. By following the laws, contributing to the well-being of their community, and considering the impact of their actions on others, individuals can help to create a society that is fair and equitable for all.
Me: Write an essay about reading books on paper and reading books digitally.
ChatGPT: Reading books on paper and reading books digitally are two popular methods of reading that have their own unique set of benefits and drawbacks.
One of the main benefits of reading books on paper is the sensory experience. Many people find the act of turning physical pages and holding a book in their hands to be a more immersive and satisfying experience than simply scrolling through a digital screen. In addition, reading on paper has been shown to have a number of cognitive benefits. Studies have shown that reading on paper can improve memory retention and comprehension, as the physical act of turning pages and the lack of distractions found on digital devices can help readers focus and better engage with the material.
However, reading books digitally has its own set of advantages. One of the most obvious benefits is convenience. Digital books can be easily accessed on a variety of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and e-readers, making it easy to take your reading material with you wherever you go. Digital books are also typically cheaper than their physical counterparts, and they take up no physical space, making them a great option for those who want to build a large library without having to find room to store all of their books.
In addition, digital books offer a number of features that can be beneficial for certain readers. For example, many digital books come with built-in dictionaries, allowing readers to easily look up unfamiliar words without having to flip through a physical dictionary. Digital books can also offer adjustable text sizes, which can be helpful for those with visual impairments.
Ultimately, whether to read books on paper or digitally is a personal choice that depends on an individual's preferences and needs. Some people may prefer the sensory experience of reading on paper, while others may appreciate the convenience and features of digital books. It is important to consider both the benefits and drawbacks of each method and choose the one that works best for you.
