Below are six of
the
thousands of cards that were collected but never used for the fifth
edition of Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary (see
also 88, 95, 112,
128, 134,
and 143). The cards were prepared by
collecting words and phrases from English sources and matching them to
Japanese words and phrases. There were several reasons why the cards
were not used, perhaps the most important being a policy decision to
base the Japanese headwords and examples on actual Japanese usage, not
