I ran across this sentence example today in a Japanese-English dictionary under 起こる:湾岸戦争は1991年に起こったI suggested changing the Japanese to 第１湾岸戦争 and the English to "the first Gulf War." As the second Gulf War has just begun, though, we will have to wait to see how the names evolve in the coming months and years.
The Gulf War broke out in 1991.
