Lexical Leavings

In the bottom right-hand corner of page 2 of the December 31 issue of Tokyo Shimbun, a small announcement stated that the newspaper would no longer write out the full name of North Korea (N`la) but just call it kN. I noticed a while back that Sankei Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun already follow that practice. Asahi, Mainichi, and Nikkei are still using, for the first reference, the full name followed by the shorter one in parentheses.
