In the
bottom right-hand corner of page 2 of the December 31 issue of Tokyo
Shimbun, a small announcement stated that the newspaper would no longer
write out the full name of North Korea (朝鮮民主主義人民共和国) but just call it
北朝鮮. I noticed a while back that Sankei Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun
already follow that practice. Asahi, Mainichi, and Nikkei are still
using, for the first reference, the full name followed by the shorter
one in parentheses.
