The word ハーフ sometimes causes consternation for native speakers of
English, as its association with "half-breed" and similar derogatory
English terms makes it seem derogatory in Japanese as well. But here's
a citation that shows both a nonderogatory use of the term and its
nonapplication to a person who might be of mixed Japanese-Chinese
parentage. The first speaker in this excerpt from a novel is a wealthy elderly woman, and the second
is a young man. They are discussing the background of a middle-aged man.「こんなことあんまり申し上げるようなことじゃございませんけどね、タローはね、日本人じゃあないんですよ」
「はあ？」
「あの、お父さんがね、日本人じゃあないんですの」
「ハーフなんですか？」
「ハーフ？ハーフ？」
夏絵は我耳を疑うようにくり返すと、吹き出した。
「まさか、アナタ、ハーフなんて、そんな上等なもんじゃあございませんわよ。引揚者でね、父親が、中国の、あのなんですか、生蕃みたいなものらしいんですのよ」
